Living in the Moment to Get More Done

Do you ever find yourself in overwhelm and unable to complete tasks that either you need, or want, to get done? I’m sure we’ve all been there but how you respond during these times can say a lot of your emotional level.

Times like those can often lead to adverse reactions, such as feeling high stress (nervousness, inability to sleep, head or back pain, etc.) or being irritable and lashing out at others.   I’m sure we all have responded that way at one time or another in some of our interactions – funny what fear and discomfort can lead to.

I don’t know about you, but I ‘m feeling a bit overwhelmed this week as I have a lot of tasks to get done; isn’t it funny (not!) how they all seem to converge at the same time? I’m usually pretty good about planning and scheduling but some tasks have very high stakes between my business and graduate teaching, especially grading papers.

When I get in these type of situations, I have to slow down, breathe and regroup. I think of a quote by Dr. Wayne Dyer:

Accept the fact that you’ll never get it all done, and to begin to live fully in the moment you have – now!”

Just reading that I won’t get it all done helps me to accept that I do have time, and that I can focus on getting done what is within my control at the moment. I work hard to focus solely on one task only for a specified time – for me, that is by the time i.e. I will get ________ done by 4pm.

There are other ways, such as putting a timer on your cell phone or to work for 15 minutes, take a break, then another 15 minutes, etc. until it’s done. Timelines work well for our brain so set those deadlines. The other is to hold yourself accountable for what you set.

This works well for all activities, even when we need a break and just have fun. Which, by I do each week by dancing and being around friends who have the same passion I do (tonight is my dancing night, btw).

So when you feel overwhelmed, know that you can ‘live in the moment’ and get it all done.
