Why the Right Mindset is Everything When it Comes to Leadership

Whether you are in a leadership role, or desire to be, you need to ask yourself what do you need to do to make this happen?

Answer: it’s all about your mindset. It’s all about the way you approach a goal and go after your training.

Every day, people make the decision to move up in their organization, which usually is in a leadership position of some type, from a team lead up to CEO. Some will make it, some won’t.

For those who don’t, or who struggle in the role, what happens next is that those people look for a reason for their failure – for something to blame. Very often, this will mean blaming the lack of training program or that the hiring person does not like them. But it’s not about that. It’s about mindset.

How Your Mindset Changes the Game

The reality is that you can have the big challenges to face, such as time or not being recognized but, if you are vigilant and you stick at it then you should still see progress and promotional opportunities. Sills are important but having the ‘right’ mindset is what will keep you going.

Remember, leadership is life-long; it doesn’t stop once you get in the role so you need to be prepared to face continual challenges, dealing with difficult people and timelines, and ensuring organizational goals are achieved.

The single key factor is that you are sticking with it.

And to do that, you need to get into the right mindset.

The Biggest Mistake People Make

So how do you change your mind precisely? What is this big mistake that so many people make?

One of the biggest problems is that many of us want results too fast. We want to see a change in our circumstance, which could get opposite results. Or, it could mean getting that promotion but not being fully prepared for the role causing you to struggle.

Of course, all this does is lead you to feeling frustrated and incredibly exhausted and stressed even before you’re leading. It’s not sustainable.

Eventually, is that you will give up, either stop pursuing to moving up into leadership or be unhappy in the role. Realistically, you could give up a great ‘gig’ and being effective. I look at ‘like cutting your nose off to spite your face’ – giving up too soon.

This is why mindset is so important to your success. Are you sure of your skills and capabilities for such as role? Are you connecting with your people or internally networking? Are you working on the capability skills organizations want today, i.e. communication, building relationships, having difficult conversations, giving feedback, etc? Do you have the confidence to lead?

Some quick tips to help ensure your mindset is strong:

  1. Know your worth, you skills, abilities, past achievements – this will build and keep the confidence you need in a leadership role
  2. Affirm your achievements and what it took to get them – say these affirmations daily so they become a habit you can rely on
  3. Visualize your succeeding as a leaders – seeing is believing

It’s important to check your mindset several times a day, as circumstances change throughout. There will be days when things will seem hard or you feel like giving up but, with a strong mindset, you can correct and adjust. The more you do, the easier it becomes.
