Putting More Work-Life Balance in Your Day

If you are not adding fun and relaxation into your daily life, then you are putting your career at risk – you won’t have the mindset or the energy to be an effective leader or employee.  This means you won’t be doing your best work and your performance will suffer at some level, which is showing up as many are now working from home. If you have children or are a caretaker of some kind, this is even more true.

Putting so much focus on your work doesn’t leave you the time to let some aspects go and give you a different, fresher perspective; this can lead to boredom, complacency and dissatisfaction.  And we know the long-term effects that can result are absenteeism, turnover, and burnout. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “when employees have a high degree of work-fit, almost two times as many want to stay in their current jobs; four times as many are highly engaged at work, and two as many are in excellent health.”

In order to know if you have the appropriate level of work-life balance, here are some questions to help you to decide and to take appropriate action to overcome any areas that are not balancing:

1. What do you do for fun and how often do you do it/them?

2. Of these fun activities, how often would like to do them, i.e. daily, weekly, monthly, or other?

3. What brings you happiness or joy in your life and how often do you experience them?

4. What inspires you?

5. What do you do to take care of yourself regarding your health, weight, or outlook?

If you found any answers that were less than, it is not too late to turn those around.  You will find that you have more energy, more focus and can make breakthrough results in your company.

Your Bold Action Plan

Begin by taking time to answer the questions honestly;  then reframe any negative aspects into positive actions; focus on the areas that you find inspiring and energizing and do more of them.  Make the commitment to do these regularly and schedule them into your weekly calendar.  Keep your focus on how doing these activities will positively benefit you so you will keep motivated to continue.
